Stewarding our Time for God’s Glory

By |2020-05-08T15:47:52-04:00July 28th, 2016|Business, Faith-Based Leadership|

When time is mentioned throughout scripture, it almost always reminds me of how misconstrued our idea of time really is. Our time on earth is so short. Like a vapor of smoke that vanishes (James 4:14.) My husband is a student pastor of 16 years and often uses a video by Francis Chan to help our students visually grasp our “timeline” of existence as humans. Francis has a lengthy rope that goes from one end of the very large stage to the other and he asked the students to imagine it went on forever. On the end of the rope he is holding there was about 3-4 inches of red tape wrapped around the rope. Francis then explains that the very small area with red tape represents our time on earth. This tiny little portion on a never ending rope? That’s crazy! You see, as short and insignificant as our time on earth may seem, our entire eternity is decided by it, which makes it incredibly significant. Our lifetime on earth is insignificantly significant - yep, it’s a thing. Insignificant in terms of time as we understand it, but SO significant in terms of the responsibility God has given [...]

Should I Share My Opinion on Social Media?

By |2020-05-08T15:48:04-04:00July 21st, 2016|Business, Faith, Faith-Based Leadership|

From politics to parenting, our world is not short on opinions. In fact, at the end of the day, I doubt anyone goes to bed thinking, “I wish I knew just one more thing about how someone else is thinking.” The joys of social media: a fantastic tool in the hands of some, and a landmine that can blow at any moment in the hands of others. As someone with a platform (not near as large as most), I used to struggle with what I should share and what I shouldn’t share. I came up with three guidelines that have helped me, and I hope they are valuable to you as you seek discernment in sharing on social media. Guideline #1: If my opinion is different than God’s opinion, I’m wrong. Isaiah 55:8-9 remind us, “’For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.’” Basically, God is reminding us here that we’re not going to ever understand fully what He does or why He does it. So whether we [...]

Ministry Has No Small Tasks

By |2020-05-08T15:49:51-04:00July 7th, 2016|Faith, Faith-Based Leadership|

“Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.”  |Romans 12:4-8| God has given each of us unique talents, qualities and abilities.  Personally, I enjoy the details. I like doing the tasks that many people roll their eyes at when they think about doing them. I cringe, start to sweat, and my heart beats a million miles a minute at the thought of speaking in front of a group of people or doing anything where the spotlight is on me. Each team member [...]

3 Tips for Writing Better Content

By |2020-05-08T15:49:57-04:00July 5th, 2016|Business, Faith-Based Leadership|

While it may seem to some that I have multiple career paths, when I’m asked what I do, I usually say, “I’m a writer and a teacher.” Because writing is a consistent part of my ministry, I’m often asked, “How do I become a better writer?” Here are my top three tips, whether you also want to write a book, you want to strengthen your blog, or beef up your social media content. Tip #1: Read good content. Writers are readers. Reading helps us learn new things and spurs new thoughts in our brains. If we have nothing to share, it probably means we haven’t learned anything new. I subscribe to about 4 different blogs, and in addition to my Bible, I’m usually reading two others books at the same time: one for spiritual development and one for personal development. I’ve learned so much about writing by remaining a student of talented writers. Side note: I’m pretty sure this goes without saying, but I’m not advocating plagiarism. If you’re reading someone else’s thoughts and it stems a new idea in your brain, I always recommend being above reproach and giving credit to the author whose thoughts inspired your words. [...]
