Unforgettable Customer Service

By |2020-05-08T15:37:56-04:00April 25th, 2017|Business, Faith, Faith-Based Leadership|

Have you ever experienced terrible customer service? Or exceptional customer service? Both are unforgettable... but only exceptional customer service happens with intentionality. (I doubt many people who would like to keep their jobs seek to be terrible!) Customer service is crucial in business AND in ministry. I emphasize AND because often times, I feel like ministries leave this emphasis out. While "customer" may not pertain to the ministry, service is perhaps the most genuine way we can align ourselves with God's love. When someone emails or calls with questions or concerns, they should know by our reply that they are dealing with a Christian. And by that, I mean they should see that our mannerisms and attitude are like Christ. We are slow to anger. We are patient, and we listen to them. There have been many emails that I have received in my years of various customer service roles where my flesh wanted to immediately send them an email back and basically say.... “I’m sorry, but no.” But then, when tempted to anger, the Holy Spirit reminds me, "Teeny, what a great opportunity to show someone My grace." It’s been the times where I have shown grace to [...]

Stop Believing the Lies

By |2020-05-08T15:40:02-04:00March 16th, 2017|Faith, Family|

I recently had an emotional breakdown. There were a lot of circumstances out of my control happening, and one night, I finally broke down. I realized that I had been fighting for so long to “have it all together” and act like my life was going 100% planned by me. Because isn’t that what we want others to think--that we’ve got it all together, we’re never thrown off our game, and we trust the Lord 100% of the time? I can tell you from experience, that’s wrong. It’s a lie and it’s wrong. We don’t have it all together. We’re thrown off our game when we’re given a curveball, and we don’t trust that the Lord has our best interests in mind. We’re human. Our sinful nature is to not trust in Him. When I finally stopped fighting, I realized 2 things: I was believing Satan’s lies, not God’s promises. It finally hit me that I had believed the enemy’s lies for so long. I thought I wasn’t capable, strong, or confident. I was so far away from God that I couldn’t hear His voice anymore. I couldn’t hear that He was saying, “Teeny, you are strong in Me.” [...]

The Likeability Test

By |2020-05-08T15:40:09-04:00March 9th, 2017|Business, Faith|

Some of the first advice I ever received in business + entrepreneurship was simply this: People do business with people they like. Duh, I remember thinking. Who doesn’t know that? But the longer I’ve been in business, the more I’ve seen that there are plenty of people who either don’t know this rule or choose to ignore it. But “likeable” can be hard to define, right? I mean, it’s not necessarily attached to a personality type. I have friends who are introverts and extroverts; super silly and more serious; easily excitable and more cautious with emotion… But plain and simple, despite some personality preferences, likeability is attached to kindness and comfortability. Basically, answer these two questions for yourself: After people encounter me, are they likely to be in a better mood or a worse mood? Does my presence put people at ease, or do I increase difficulty, annoyance, worry or stress? Now, I realize those questions can be difficult to answer, so let’s consider a few scenarios: The Grocery Store You’re walking into the store as someone else is walking out. Do you look them in the eyes, smile, and maybe even say hello? Or do you catch eye contact, only to immediately break away to find the sky, the floor [...]

Leading in Love

By |2020-05-08T15:40:23-04:00February 28th, 2017|Faith, Faith-Based Leadership, Family|

Do you have an opinion about Valentine’s Day? {My husband thinks it always falls on a Tuesday and this year, he was right!} I know there are some who dread it, some who adore it, and some who just say “meh.” I totally understand all of those reactions, but I’ve got to tell you that it’s an incredibly special day for my family. My husband Phil and I were married right around Valentine’s Day {February 18, to be exact}, so this holiday will forever be surrounded by sweet memories for me {and maybe a few thoughts of the crazy last-minute wedding prep, too!}. This past week we celebrated our fifth wedding anniversary, and I’m so excited and honored to share with you a few of the leadership qualities that make my man so inspiring. When I think about the leadership traits I admire most in my husband, there are two things that come to mind almost immediately {Honesty time: I’ve been sitting here trying to do this blog post justice, and I know my words won’t be enough, so I hope you can hear my heart in these}. First, my husband is a true prayer warrior. Not many people [...]

Leading in Love

By |2020-05-08T15:40:37-04:00February 14th, 2017|Faith, Family|

“So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them with his skillful hands.” – Psalm 78:72 I remember the first time I read this verse after meeting my now-husband. Immediately, I said, “That’s James.” (Considering the fact that this verse is written about David, the same one God called “a man after His own heart,” [1 Samuel 13:14] that’s no small feat!) “He shepherded them” Some of you may not know this, but my husband stepped down from his pastor position at our church when our daughter, Shea, was born. (More on this under the next heading!) But throughout his career in ministry, James has never sought after a title. In fact, if you ask him his ministry strengths, he would tell you, “I’m a shepherd.” Not “I’m a fantastic preacher” (even though he is), or “I’m a strong leader” (which he is, and a lovable leader at that), but simply, “I’m a shepherd.” A shepherd has many responsibilities, but when I think of James’ heart as a shepherd, here are the first things that come to mind: I think about how he strives for unity in all things because he takes his responsibility [...]
