Leading in Love

18 years, 2 kiddos (hundreds if you add in our student ministry kiddos), 10 homes, 5 states, 3 churches, and countless eye rolls, laughs, tears, and arguments over my driving. That’s how well I know the subject of this blog post: my husband, Kent. This may just be the most comfortable I’ve ever been writing a blog. When Michelle had the idea to celebrate “love month” by asking our team to write about the leadership traits we respect most in our spouses, I wasn't worried about figuring out what to share. But I was worried about figuring out how to sum it up in one short blog. I’ve got a pretty awesome man. My husband is one of the greatest leaders I know, but I was able to narrow it down to the three things I admire most about his leadership...and desire to work on for myself. He leads quietly. In fact, Kent leads so quietly that many don't even realize he is the one leading. I know some mistake his quiet leadership for weak leadership. I confess: I used to. But I was so wrong. Kent doesn't need a stage, or a podcast, or a title. He just [...]

Embrace Your Gentle Spirit

Introvert: [n] a shy person; a person characterized by concern primarily with his or her own thoughts and feelings Do you consider yourself an introvert? I have been an introvert my whole life, both at home and in the workplace. Thankfully, being an introvert doesn’t mean you can’t be a leader as well. I’ve compiled a list of 5 tips to help introverts be leaders too.  Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone Getting out of your comfort zone can be a scary thing, but it can also be such a good thing. I wrote a blog a few weeks ago about getting out of your comfort zone. You can read it here. The Lord does not call us to be comfortable. He wants us to TRUST and obey Him. I know that it can be scary, awkward, and uncomfortable. But the Lord rewards those who trust Him. And for introverts, it can mean being exposed to things that you normally wouldn’t if you didn’t get out of your comfort zone. Take Initiative Being an introvert doesn’t have to mean that we sit back, never speak up and only do the work we’ve been given. Taking initiative can show that [...]

Stepping Out into God’s Calling

By |2020-05-08T15:41:08-04:00January 17th, 2017|Faith, Family, Health|

Just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous. - Romans 5:19 Throughout Scripture, we read accounts of how people’s obedience affected not only their own lives but often an entire nation. The greatest example of this is Jesus Himself. Christ’s obedience to death on the cross made a way for us to be called children of God. Likewise, our choices can have a lasting impact on both our own lives and the lives of the people around us. Our choices will not only impact our own lives, but they could also have a lasting impact on generations to come. Just look at the story of Adam and Eve, for example. They made one poor choice and disobeyed God, and the world as God originally created it was forever changed. On the flip side, good choices can also affect generations to come. If we look at Noah’s choice to listen to God and build the ark, we can safely say that this wise step of obedience had lasting results. If we would stop and take a moment to think [...]

When Disapproval Turns to Disappointment

By |2020-05-08T15:41:27-04:00December 28th, 2016|Business, Faith, Family|

Why would people who should support me ignore this exciting moment in my life? I racked my brain for something I had done wrong…for anything I could have done differently. I waited, thinking surely something would change. Something…anything, really…would at least be said. But it didn’t. It hasn’t. I may never have answers why. And after some time praying and wrestling through it, I’m finally at peace…even without the answer I thought I needed. In the middle of one of my tearful prayer sessions, desperately seeking to know the answer to the question, “Why, God? Why is it like this?” He chose to answer a different question, which gave me the answer I really needed: “Why are you looking for their approval, Michelle? Why do you need their validation? Doesn’t My Word remind you this world is not your home (Hebrews 13:14)? That the fear of man is a snare (Proverbs 29:25)? And that only I can truly satisfy your soul (John 4:14)? Knowing the why probably wouldn’t have benefitted me. What I needed was the reminder of the Who. Him. My God alone. Our approval rating doesn’t come from this world. And no matter how hard we look [...]

The Unforgettable Christmas Tradition

By |2020-05-08T15:41:32-04:00December 20th, 2016|Faith, Family|

I’m not a super sentimental person, but there are a few things that make it feel like Christmas in our home: eggnog (even though none of us really love it); over-decorating (My husband nearly risks his life on our roof each year hanging lights); and of course movies (everything from Bing Crosby’s crooning + Kevin McAllister’s infamous scream.) But my favorite Christmas family tradition? Giving of ourselves more and loving others louder. Just a few hours ago, we finished our 3rd Annual Christmas Shop Event hosted by the church my husband is on staff at and the fitness studio we own. The Christmas Shop is an event where we transform our fitness studio into a giant toy store. Parents, guardians, and grandparents in need get to come, shop for the children and teenagers in their home, eat goodies, and have everything gift wrapped at no cost to them. It’s magical. I’m blown away by the amount of help that showed up at 6:45am on an icy Saturday morning just seven days before Christmas. I’m amazed at the amount of toys that we had donated. But most of all, I get teary-eyed just reflecting on what we got to watch [...]
