Top 5 Tips for Families with Two Working Parents

By |2020-05-08T15:35:51-04:00July 11th, 2017|Business, Family|

After 18 years of marriage with my husband, Kent, and I both working, God has taught us many lessons on juggling our working parent roles on top of everything else. It was hard to narrow it down to five, but these are the lessons I cherish the most: Grace upon grace… upon grace. There are seasons when certain careers are busier than others, which means there will be seasons where one working parent needs more support AND grace than the other. Kent is a student pastor, so his summers are crazy. Between camps, 1:1 discipleship, events, and our regular weekly services, he maximizes summers while his students have some free time in their own lives. I’ve learned for me, summer has to slow down so that I can be the support he needs. I may have to cut some of my extra projects and delegate more of my task list, but it’s totally worth to watch him shine during his prime time, and I know he will soon be returning the favor for me. Avoid the “score-keeper” marriage. Are you a score-keeper? You know, this kind of spouse: “I made the coffee yesterday, so he needs to make it [...]

Avoiding the Summer-Long Netflix Binge: How to Empower your Kids’ Summer

By |2020-05-08T15:37:05-04:00June 6th, 2017|Business, Family|

Over the last month, we have been talking about preparing for productivity in the summer. Schedules change, kids take over, and your desire is to make memories — not to-do lists! But one thing we haven't talked about yet is “assisting” your school age children in making sure their summer is productive too…instead of ending up with a three-month Netflix binge-fest! Of course, we desire freedom and relaxation for our kids, but we also want them to function as human beings - not tweenage/teenage zombies who wake up at 1pm and spend the day raiding the refrigerator.  So, here are my top five tips for helping those precious children of yours be more productive… without creating rifts in your relationship.   #1: No sleeping the day away. I think having your kids out of bed between 8-9am is ideal. Here’s why: We need routine - ALL of us. So enforcing a wake time allows them to start their day with a routine. Sometimes, we try to make bedtime the rule and what happens is they go to bed and toss and turn for two hours because we let them sleep until noon. Plain and simple: the earlier they get [...]

Firsts and Lasts

By |2020-05-08T15:37:28-04:00May 11th, 2017|Business, Faith, Family|

I was raised by extremely loving parents. (By the way swHw ladies, my mother worked full-time my entire life.)  I realized at a fairly young age what a gift that was. When Kent and I became parents, we looked a lot to the advice of our parents. I’m so thankful they shared their wisdom only when we asked, never when it was unsolicited. (You know what I mean!) When our daughter, Kennedi, was getting ready to head off to kindergarten, I was talking with my Dad and dramatically complaining about how big she was and how fast time was flying. I was a working mom, so I carried bitterness with me that was a byproduct of the guilt I felt because I got up and went to work everyday instead of baking muffins and playing with play-dough. I felt I was justified in my pity party. After all, she was a baby in my arms just yesterday and now, I was packing a lunch and letting go of her hand outside of a classroom. It was okay for me to cry. After my Dad saw my sad face, he looked at me (and my Mom who was also struggling [...]

Top Five Habits for Personal Growth

By |2020-05-08T15:38:02-04:00April 20th, 2017|Business, Family|

Your business will stop growing when you do. Plain and simple. If you want your business to grow, you must also keep growing. Because personal growth is a passion point for me, I’d love to give you the top five habits (Yes, that means actions that are done repeatedly, not once!) that will keep you growing. Let’s dig in: Pray specifically. My prayers used to be pretty general: “Thank you, God, for everything You’ve given me. God, use me. God, help me pursue You in all things. God, be with my family.” While those aren’t bad prayers, I’ve found praying specifically has helped me increase intimacy with the Lord as I speak with Him like my trusted Father. For example, just this morning, I was praying for my oldest, Noah. Instead of just asking God to protect him and guide him, here is part of my prayer from my journal: “God, thank you so much for the responsibility of being Noah’s mom. Help me be the kind of earthly parent that continuously points him to You. God, I pray that He will accept Jesus Christ as His Savior at a young age and walk closely with You always. Help [...]

Six Days to a Clutter FREE Home

By |2020-05-08T15:38:13-04:00April 6th, 2017|Family, Health|

Clutter is the worst. You may claim that it truly doesn't bother you, but I would ask you the same question I ask my Productivity Academy students who tell me that: Have you ever tried life without clutter? When I finally get them to commit to de-cluttering just their workspace, a light bulb moment happens, and they fall in love with their organized, de-cluttered space. No one has ever said “I really wish I hadn't done that, Somer!” These are some of the benefits they notice immediately: They don't dread sitting down to work. They are more productive. They are less distracted. They complete more tasks instead of jumping from one task to another. They sleep better. (Interesting, right?) They realize they didn’t need nearly as much stuff as they thought they did. So I’m challenging you to change up your typical Spring Cleaning regimen. Skip the windows and baseboards, and instead, purge like you never have before! Think you don't have time for a project like this? Give me 2-3 hours a day for six days, (You can break them up, doing one hour in the morning and two hours at night even!) and see what happens. THE [...]
