Put yourself in the disciples’ shoes for a moment with me.
A huge crowd has gathered to come see Jesus. He has compassion on them, heals the sick among them… and then, it starts getting late. People are going to get hungry soon, and you’re kinda in the middle of nowhere. You head to Jesus + nobly say, “Hey, it’s going to get dark soon, so we need to send the crowds away to go buy food.”
You’re completely caught off guard when Jesus says, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.”
Faced with the daunting task of feeding thousands of people, you feel the weight of your scarcity quickly. How can you possibly meet such a great need with so little?!
You cut right to reality with Jesus: “We have only five loaves here and two fish.”
Jesus responds with a directive you’ll never forget:
“Bring them to Me.”
Then, Jesus prays over the food, and you start passing it out to the crowds. You have no clue how it’s happening, but every time you think you’re handing out the last of it, more appears, so you keep serving more people. You repeat this over and over until the thousands are all stuffed to satisfaction…
…and there’s still 12 baskets of leftovers.
Jesus did the impossible — He took their scarcity and turned it into abundance. He wasn’t limited by what they had; instead, He performed a miracle that surpassed their human limits.
What if, just like the disciples, our scarcity is an invitation to trust God fully?
– OR – [hang with me for this!]
What if what we see as scarcity is actually excess — something God knows we’re better off without?
That’s the convo we’re having on this week’s podcast — as requested by our Patreon community — having a scarcity mindset vs. an abundance mindset. It’s a weird tension because what the world is getting right about abundance was all God’s idea BUT abundance as the world defines it — without Jesus — is still scarcity.
