People don’t talk about meaningless things when they know their time is short – and that’s the lens we get to read 2 Timothy. Knowing his death was inevitable, Paul wrote his final letter to Timothy, a pastor who was like his spiritual son. It’s hard to imagine that behind his words that are full of faith, confident hope and unwavering endurance, is a man who was cold, lonely and awaiting execution. These four short chapters are saturated in truth, encouragement, practical theology, and personal instruction: the foundation of the gospel, the importance of sound doctrine, a warning about false teachers, the necessity of gospel community, examples of what to do and what not to do, and requirements for being a faithful disciple in a broken world. In 2 Timothy, Paul both addresses everything that really matters and intentionally ignores everything that does not.
